This case involved an unsafe stairway at our client’s apartment complex in the San Fernando Valley. Our client was walking down the stairs when suddenly a step broke in half causing our client to tumble down the stairs. Our client ultimately required back and knee surgery. For years in litigation, the landlord defendants denied responsibility; in response to our $1 million settlement demands, they offered a maximum of $75,000 – telling us that the case “will never be worth a million dollars”. The case eventually proceeded to trial, and halfway through trial, the defendants finally saw the writing on the wall. Prior to the case being decided by a jury, the defense offered our client $5 million, which he accepted.
